What is astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid that gives pink or red color to wild salmon, trouts, shrimps and krill oil [1,2]. Fish produce astaxanthin from carotenoids consumed with algae and plankton.

Nonprescription (over-the-counter) oral astaxanthin supplements are available.

Astaxanthin Health Benefits

There is INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE about the effectiveness of astaxanthin supplements in the prevention or treatment of cataracts, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, macular degeneration, male infertility, stomach ulcers, or in enhancing recovery after exercise [1].

Astaxanthin Safety: Side Effects, Toxicity

Astaxanthin has no documented serious side effects and is “expected to have a low order of toxicity” [1].
