What are very long-chain fatty acids?

Very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) have 23 or more carbon (C) atoms.

VLCFA examples:

  • Lignoceric acid (C24)
  • Cerotic acid (C26) (in beeswax)
  • Montanic acid (C28)
  • Melissic acid (C30)
  • Lacceroic acid (C32)
  • Geddic acid (C34)
  • Hexatriacontylic acid (C36).

All these very long-chain fatty acids are saturated.
